Don’t you just hate it when everything starts slipping through your fingers?
There’s only one remedy: keep on dancing!
Two hands and four dancing legs try to hold back falling stones – in vain.

A man lies in his bed in a room with no door
He waits, hoping for a presence or something, anything to enter
After spending half his life searching, he still felt as blank as the ceiling at which he stared
He is alive, but feels absolutely nothing, so is he?
When he was six, he believed that the moon overhead followed him
By nine, he deciphered the illusion, trading magic for fact, no trade-backs
So this is what it’s like to be an adult?
If he only knew now what he knew then.

First, the dancers’improvisations were filmed.
Afterwards the imaginary world around the dancers was created, by applying paint, paper, camera and video editing.
This way, a short dance performance was created that only exists on video.

As we wait, giant hands squirm around us.
Are they threatening us? Do they play us? Do they protect us?
What are we waiting for, by the way?

In the fall of 2009, when Germany was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall,
I spend a month as an artist-in-residence in Berlin.
During my stay I did research on the building and the fall of the Berlin Wall and on the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS) / the Stasi, the Secret Service of the DDR and their archive and prison in Berlin.
Themes such as the lack of freedom to move around, the lack of privacy and group behavior are related to my work in general, so I was inspired by my Berlin-research to make a short film:
“Walled in”.

Pakhuis Wilhelmina in Amsterdam
You usually do not recognize yourself on photographs of your earliest childhood years. You know: “that child is me, I was there”, but memories are missing.
If you try to move yourself into the world of childhood photos, you almost feel in the dark.
The installation “Shadowlands” reconstructs the world of early childhood photos and can be experienced as a strange landscape that is fairytale and ghostly at the same time.

installation for the contemporary dance company Conny Janssen Danst
in the Van Nelle Fabriek Rotterdam
The installation, created especially for this project, marks the transition area between outside (the city) and inside (the dance floor).
The audience walks through a spatial construction of painted, semi-transparent canvases.
Shadows of spectators merge with painted human figures through the use of light.
The figures on the canvases seem to be involved in a fierce battle; both with themselves and each other, and with the painted environment in which they find themselves mirrored.
The painting is a choreography that has solidified over time.
The painting is made up of human figures that have been taken from observations during rehearsals by Conny Janssen Danst. All kinds of movements that can be seen in the periphery of the incipient rehearsal process, were forged into a baroque composition.
