‘Rare Landscape’

The sculptural form seems to hide something beneath its surface, but what?
The shape resembles the remains of a piece of forest that long ago consisted of large trees.
The organically shaped surface also has associations with the spine and with organs such as the kidneys.

The expression “the elephant in the room” is a metaphorical idiom for an important or enormous topic, question, or controversial issue that is obvious or that everyone knows about but no one mentions or wants to discuss (because it makes at least some of them uncomfortable and is personally, socially, or politically embarrassing, controversial, inflammatory, or even dangerous).

A man seems to have been caught in an hourglass.
The hourglass is associated with the passage of time and symbolizes the transience of life. In art, it is a frequently used object in still life paintings (vanitas).

The wooded area enters a well cottage by using charcoal from the fireplace in the farmhouse.
The well cottage has a sacred atmosphere of itself with its oval shape.

The spectator is in an area with strange crops over which an image of aqueous substance is projected.
The whole sphere is marshy and dystopian in nature as in the two films that are also part of the installation.

Vulnerability and monumentality go hand in hand in this installation.
The installation is made out of hand-painted paper, in which a half-round is split by a plain.
These forms might evoke associations with a hull in the water or a skate-site, both former functions of this space (shipyard and indoor skate-site).
The history of the NDSM site (Dutch Dock and Shipbuilding Company) goes back to 1894.
In 1946 three former shipyards merged together, creating the NDSM. In 1984 the yard closed her doors. This space was transformed into an indoor skate-site.
For this occasion it is an exhibition space with a rich history.

an installation for the window gallery “Het Depot” in Amsterdam
Walls form partitions between inside and outside, between private and public. The stones that make up this wall can also be viewed as painted landscapes with distant horizons. A ladder has been released from this wall, which allows contact to arise between what is happening in front of the wall and behind the wall.
An installation that represents the hope that our need for privacy in urban life does not turns out to being indifferent to fellow humans and the environment in which we live.

A thoughtful crowd is standing in a landscape with ladders that seem to reach into the sky.
Do they dare to climb the unknown?
At the invitation of Kunsthal 45 in Den Helder / commissioned by the Woningstichting Den Helder. This installation was made within the “Work to be done at the Store” project with the theme “expansion”.
